Chapter 7 – Silent Retreat

The rain returned as I left Grace’s apartment, heavier this time, as if the city had decided to wash away the night’s indiscretions before the sun could expose them.

I walked without destination for an hour, coat soaked through, mind churning like the river below.

Three offers. One woman who had just given me everything except an answer.

A board meeting in less than twenty-four hours that would force me to choose or be chosen for.

I needed silence. Real silence. Not the kind you find in hotel rooms with white-noise machines, not the kind broken by ZenTalk buzzes. The kind that hurts because it’s empty.

I remembered a place from my early days in Eastbridge—a small temple complex on the city’s northern edge, half-forgotten, perched on a low hill overlooking rice fields that had long since given way to industrial parks.

It was called Whispering Pines Retreat, though the pines were mostly gone, replaced by concrete and billboards. The monks had stayed, stubborn as roots in cracked pavement.

They took no money, asked no questions, offered only a mat, a bowl of rice, and the rule of no speaking.

I hailed a taxi. Told the driver the address. He raised an eyebrow but drove.

The temple gate was rusted iron, half-open. A young novice in gray robes nodded once when I approached, no surprise at the drenched foreigner arriving unannounced. He led me through a courtyard of cracked stone to a small wooden building at the back—single room, tatami floor, low table, thin futon, window overlooking nothing but gray sky and distant smokestacks.

He bowed, left without a word.

I stripped off the wet clothes, hung them on the line outside the door, wrapped myself in the provided robe—rough cotton, smelling faintly of incense and mildew. Then I sat on the futon and did nothing.

No phone. No envelopes. No offers.

Just the rain on the roof, steady, relentless.

Hours passed. Or minutes. Time lost shape.

My mind tried to fill the silence with noise—David’s measured voice, Victoria’s surgical precision, Harlan’s purge list, Elena’s fingers on my thigh, Grace’s breath against my neck.

The photograph of the forgotten woman.

The boardroom waiting tomorrow.

I let it all rise and fall like breath. Didn’t fight. Didn’t cling.

At some point the novice returned with a tray: plain rice, steamed greens, hot tea in a clay cup. He set it down, bowed, left.

I ate slowly. The food was simple, flavorless almost, but it grounded me. Each bite reminded me of Uncle Chen’s noodles, of classroom lunches with students who once thought I knew everything.

After eating, I walked the temple grounds. The rain had eased to mist. Stone paths wound between bonsai trees, small shrines, a koi pond where fish moved like slow thoughts. I sat on a low bench facing the pond, watched the water ripple with each drop.

A memory surfaced—unbidden, sharp.

Years ago, in the early days of teaching, Max had asked me during a lesson: “Teacher, why do you always look tired?”

I’d laughed it off. “Big thoughts make heavy eyes.”

He’d frowned. “Then stop thinking so big.
